Details

"I was in that bar and those crazy (people) chased after me ... I was scared, and that's why I was hiding," a theft suspect told an arresting officer. He was found hiding near Lake Mendota, next to an air conditioning unit, behind a building in the 600 block of N. Henry St. Saturday night.

Prior to the MPD joining the pursuit, he was being tracked by bar staff from Paul's Club, 204 State St. One employee, a bouncer, had his iPhone 4S stolen while it was being charged inside the nightclub. A colleague was using a "Find My iPhone" app on a different phone to track the one that had been swiped. GPS indicated the phone was in the area where the officer and bar staff members were searching.

When the suspect was found, he denied stealing the phone, and to prove it, he told the officer he could be searched. The officer did search him, and he also had a member of the citizen posse call the phone's number. It began ringing, and was found in the snow, beneath a trash can, right next to where the suspect had been trying to conceal himself. "You know what? Just take me to jail," he said, "I'm done answering questions."
