Details

A poor-driving car thief didn't get far Tuesday afternoon before he abandoned the vehicle he had just stolen, and took off on foot. He was forced to do so because he badly damaged the rear-end of the Ford Taurus, so much so, it was no longer drivable. It all started at the Mobil gas station, 4601 Verona Rd. The car's owner, a 33-year old Fitchburg woman, had pulled up to the pumps, left the car running, while she went inside to prepay for some gas. While waiting in line, she looked out to see a thief getting in her car. She ran out, in an attempt to stop him. He put the car in reverse and gunned the engine. The woman was not struck, but the sudden movement caused her to fall to the pavement and strike her head. The man behind the wheel failed to see there was a delivery truck in his path, and he careened into it, still in reverse. He put the stolen auto in drive and sped off, only to make it a short distance before bailing out and leaving the Taurus in the middle Britta Parkway.
