AddressS. Baldwin St.
ArrestedAkayja J. Retelle, age 17, Madison
Suspect was arrested for Theft and Misappropriation of Personal Identifying Materials (fraud).
Victim(s)Female, age 31, Madison
DetailsThe MPD tracked down a theft suspect inside the Dane County Court House yesterday afternoon as she was making an appearance for a previous arrest.
Using surveillance video and store records police connected the 17-year old to a crime spree that started this past November when a 31-year old Madison woman had her purse stolen as she was riding on a Madison Metro bus.
She had gotten on in the S. Baldwin St. area. The bus was crowded, so she was standing. She did not realize until she got off that someone had lifted her wallet out of her backpack.
Bus video shows the suspect, who was seated, taking an object from the pack. In hours that followed, the victim's stolen credit card was used to fuel a West Towne Mall shopping spree.
UGG boots were among items purchased at several stores, and the suspect was wearing a pair, matching those fraudulently purchased, as she made her court appearance yesterday.
