A hit-and-run driver was able to flee the scene of a Friday morning crash, but his car was so damaged from the collision that it came to a stop several miles away in downtown Madison. A 24-year old Sun Prairie man told police he was on a ramp, going from Highway 30 onto Highway 51, when a car slammed into the back of his pickup truck. He said the car suffered significant frontend damage and its airbags deployed. He tried to follow it, but the other driver sped off and lost him. Several minutes later, Central District officers were sent to S. Blair St. and E. Wilson St. That's where the damaged car suffered mechanical shutdown. A 35-year old woman was in the passenger seat. She had suffered facial injuries in the crash and was taken to a hospital. The 36-year old driver told police he had taken prescription medication prior to the collision. He was cited for several infractions including operating under the influence. In the run up to the crash, numerous concerned motorists called 911 about the arrested driver. They said he was driving erratically on Interstate 94, swerving in and out of traffic lanes as he was heading towards Madison.
