Incident Report for Case #2014-22551

Incident Type

Residential Burglary

Incident Date

01/22/2014 - 6:00 AM

5100 block Oak Valley Dr.

Male, black, 6', medium build; driving a red car.

Male, age 32, Madison
Male, age 38, Sun Prairie

The stranger seemed like a decent guy; he spoke well, and he was asking a 38-year old Sun Prairie man if he liked to "board." The Sun Prairie man got into this conversation as he was about to get into his car after leaving work near E. Washington Ave. Wednesday afternoon. The friendly fellow, parked behind him, let him know he had some snowboarding equipment in his car that he was looking to sell. There were two boards, some boots, and other equipment in a bag. The Sun Prairie man offered $150 and the deal was done. However, as he got home, and took a closer look at his purchase, he saw a name tag on the bag. As he inspected it, and thought a little more about the chance encounter, he became more and more suspicious. He called the number on the tag and ended up speaking with an Oak Valley Dr. resident in Madison. It turned out the 32-year old had been burglarized the night prior after forgetting to close his garage door. The Sun Prairie man made arrangements to return the snowboarding gear. He wasn't looking for compensation. He just wanted to do the right thing.
