Incident Date01/15/2014 - 3:30 AM
Address2703 W. Beltline Highway (7-Eleven)
Victim(s)Female, age 20
DetailsThe caller seemed professional, and for awhile the 20-year old gas station clerk thought he was legit, until he asked her to provide him security code numbers off a couple of Green Dot prepaid debit cards. The fraud attempt took place last week. The 7-Eleven on the W. Beltline Highway was the target. The man on the phone, "Tom Wood," claimed to be with some company involved with fixing credit card scanner problems. He started by asking the clerk to scan a piece of candy. She did, and he said that looked good on his end. He next asked to preload $400 on each of two Green Dot cards, which would also need to be scanned. That is when red flags went up on the clerk's end. She told the man she did not wish to get fired by doing something like that, and told him she would be calling her manager and the police. She realized he wasn't seeing anything on "his end," but had he gotten the Green Dot card numbers, he would have been on his way to easy $400.
