Incident Report for Case #2014-7379

Incident Type

Incident Date

01/08/2014 - 12:00 PM

5400 Quarry Park Rd.

Male, age 30, Madison

He admits, it did seem suspicious, but he was in-between jobs, needed some extra cash, and thought this might be a good opportunity. It started on December 22nd, when the 30-year old Madison man posted some furniture for sale on Craigslist. He got a text message back shortly thereafter from an out-of-state person who was interested. More texts were exchanged and the victim was told money orders were on the way to cover the cost of the furniture, mover's fees, as well as a holding fee - an extra $50 the seller was to keep to compensate for the time lag between the sale and the time movers arrived. He ended up getting two money orders, each for $965. Per agreement, he cashed them, took out the furniture and holding fee money, and sent the rest, via MoneyGram to a California address. He seemed to think this went well, and when the "buyer" asked if he would help with a couple of other similar transactions, the Madisonian decided he would "help out." He ended up sending more money orders to addresses in Florida and Missouri. Then came the bad news. The money orders were fraudulent, and he was out over $3,000.
