DetailsWitnesses told police the pickup truck driver was temporarily slumped over the wheel following the crash. Before police arrived, he got out and took off running. The truck he was operating Monday afternoon had struck a van at the intersection of John Nolen Dr. and Olin Ave. The van is owned by Meriter Hospital, and its driver, a 58-year old Madison man, was not seriously injured. He said he was turning west onto Olin Ave. from northbound John Nolen Dr. when the pickup - which was traveling south on John Nolen - hit him. Responding officers were able to chase down the fleeing suspect. He had needles and other drug paraphernalia in his pockets. The arresting officer said the driver also smelled of intoxicants. He insisted he had not been in a crash.
