Verona Road (near Raymond Road)

Female, age 31, Madison

Two Madison Police officers will be nominated for life-saving awards after convincing a distraught woman not to jump off of a Verona Rd. bridge early Sunday morning.

The 31-year old woman told officers she was "done," and made other suicidal statements.

A scene sergeant provided a summary of the incident:

"When located, (the woman) was seated on (the bridge's) edge with her legs hanging fully over and (she was) leaning forward.  The bridge edge is approx 8-10 inches in width and sits 25 feet or so from the roadway below.  She stated that she was simply building up the courage to jump and looked like she may fall multiple times during the negotiations.  She was looking around quickly out of fear that officers would run up on her and was also rocking back and forth as if preparing to simply fall forward off the bridge.  (The officers) were able to calm her down from her initial state, gained her trust and got her to speak with them and ultimately coaxed her off the edge.  Their actions tonight deescalated a potentially deadly situation and resulted in (the woman) receiving the care she needed. "
