Incident Report for Case #2014-157381

Incident Type

Incident Date

05/22/2014 - 11:00 AM

Lake Point Dr.

Female, age 79, Madison

A Madison grandmother was recently bilked out of $3000 after falling for a relatively common scam. She had gotten a call from a man identifying himself as her 27-year old grandson. He claimed to be embarrassed about being arrested, and did not want her to tell anyone that he was calling for bail money.

The "grandson" explained drugs were found in a car in which he had been a passenger, and that he was now in a Des Moines, Iowa jail cell.

He convinced the 79-year old woman to go to a grocery store and use her credit card to put $3,000 on Reloadit cards.

She was then contacted by "Officer Walton" of Des Moines' "16th Precinct." He asked her to provide to him the identification numbers on the cards, which she did. He then told her there had been a mistake, and that additional bail money would be needed.

It was at this point that the woman became suspicious. She called her grandson's home and spoke with his wife. She assured he was not in jail, but at work.

The criminals were using a phone number that came back to Quebec, Canada: 438-764-9055.
