Incident Date

06/05/2014 - 4:30 PM

230 W. Lakelawn Pl. (MacTaggarts Market & Deli)

Phone scam artists continue to contact Madison businesses while pretending to represent local utility companies. In most cases, criminals try to convince victims that they are behind in payments and in danger of having electrical service disconnected.

In the latest fraud - reported to the MPD on June 5th - a caller persuaded an employee at MacTaggart's Market and Deli, 230 W. Lakelawn Place, to load $1,500 on Green Dot cards. The employee then provided the cards' security numbers to the caller. The criminal was using phone number 866-978-8070.

That is the same number provided to an employee at Capital Auto Protection, 2914 Syene Rd. It was June 3rd, and the victim was told he was behind in payments to MG&E. He knew this was not true and did not send any money.

On the same day, a man with a foreign sounding voice called the GrandStay Residential Suites, 5317 High Crossing Blvd. He claimed to be with Alliant Energy, and told an employee that he must pay $1,500 to avoid having power cutoff. The employee determined he was being scammed before sending funds.
