Incident Report for Case #2014-178040

Incident Type

Incident Date

06/08/2014 - 2:00 PM

901 E. Johnson St. (Burnie's Rock Shop)

Male, black, 5'7", bald, wearing a white and dark blue checkered shirt and longer dark shorts.

Female, black or Hispanic, light complexion, 5'3", wearing a red shirt with a flower pattern and denim capri pants.

A thief took two wedding bands from Burnie's Rock Shop last weekend and tried to cover his crime by replacing more expensive jewelry with two cheaper rings he had brought to the store.

An employee said the man made the swap as she helped his female accomplice look at other items. The victim later realized it was an orchestrated distraction and did not realize the two rings - valued at $1,750 - were gone until the couple left the store. In their place were two rings that were not part of the store's inventory.

The employee had gotten several rings out of a case as the customers were interested in looking at wedding rings.

After calling police, the employee contacted other area jewelry stores to warn about the criminals' tactics.
