Suspects were taken into custody for parole violations.
DetailsAn employee at a Madison metal recycling plant stalled two suspected copper thieves Tuesday morning as police were called to the facility.
Staff at Alter Metal Recycling, 4400 Sycamore Ave, and those working at for other local metal recycling companies, had been alerted by Hooper Corporation to be on the lookout after $1,500 worth of copper pipe was stolen last week from a construction site in the 4600 block of Eastpark Blvd. The pipe had identifying marks which matched those found on metal the suspects were trying to sell.
Officers arrived at Alter Metal and arrested the men on parole violations. Detectives are looking at tentatively charging them with receiving stolen property and possibly burglary.
A Hooper Corporation employee estimates $10,000 worth of copper pipe has been stolen in the past few months from the Eastpark Blvd. site.
The MPD continues to work with construction companies and with metal recyclers in an effort to curtail copper thefts.
