A 15-year-old driver, who had been drinking, totaled his family's SUV after losing control on N. Walbridge Ave. and hitting a tree early this morning. Officers arrived to find the drive shaft 50-feet from the rest of the vehicle. It had extensive front end damage, three of four tires were coming off, the airbags had deployed, and fuel was leaking. The Madison Fire Department was called in to neutralize the spill.

The driver had fled the scene, but was located at his home after officers ran the SUV's license plate. His family was not aware he had taken it out for a joyride until police told them it was now inoperable and being towed away.
