Incident Report for Case #2014-244432

Incident Type

Robbery

Incident Date

07/30/2014 - 8:44 PM

Address

Wisconsin Ave. (at East Dayton St.)

Suspect(s)

Male, black, 16-20 years old, 5'5", slender build, wearing a white t-shirt and jean shorts.

Victim(s)

Female, age 34, Sun Prairie, WI

Details

A Sun Prairie woman was looking down at her iPhone while standing in the area of Wisconsin Ave. and E. Dayton St. last night. As she did so, a young bicyclist peddled past and grabbed the phone from her hand.

The MPD encourages citizens to practice good situational awareness when using small, expensive electronics. In many similar strong-armed robbery cases victims are so absorbed in their devices that they lose touch with their surroundings.

One veteran MPD sergeant likes to compare holding an iPhone, or similar device, to clutching a stack of $100 bills in your hand. You would not nonchalantly walk around holding those - or leave them sitting somewhere - and similar precautions are advised for protecting pricey electronics.
