Incident Date

07/31/2014 - 9:40 AM

100 block N. Bassett St.

Ray A. Wallace, age 60, Madison
Suspect was arrested for Theft and Possession of Burglarious Tools.

Male, age 20, Madison

A 20-year old downtown resident left his car unlocked, for just a couple of minutes this morning, as he ran inside the N. Bassett St. residence where he has been staying. It was enough time for a thief to quickly go into the car and swipe the victim's backpack, containing a laptop computer. Fortunately for the victim, a neighbor saw the crime and called for the MPD. She told officers that not only had the suspect stolen the backpack, but he also went up to a nearby home and cut the power cord off of a window air conditioner.

She provided a good description, and let officers know the suspect was on a bicycle and pulling a bike trailer. Officers spotted him on N. Frances St. He was bent over a utility box, where wires were exposed. The stolen backpack was in his bike trailer, as were numerous electrical cords. The arrested man told officers he steals them for copper they contain. He was in possession of numerous cutting tools and a lengthy criminal record.
