Details

An on-duty Madison firefighter demanded a suspected drunken driver turn over his truck keys last night following a crash inside the Overture Center Garage, 318 W. Mifflin St.

The concerned firefighter works at Fire Station #1, which is just across the street from the parking ramp.  He watched as the frustrated driver was unable to get an exit gate to rise. The driver rapidly backed up, jumping a curb, scraping a concrete pillar before striking a parked car. The firefighter says the man continued backing and an oncoming van driver had to honk to avoid a possible collision. It was about this time he intervened. The firefighter got the suspect to turn over the keys and he parked the pickup truck. The two men then walked toward Station #1 as police were summoned. The suspect announced he was going to use a porta potty, located at a nearby construction site. Officers arrived and could not him inside the bathroom, and believed he had now wandered into the large building site. A police dog arrived, and loud announcements to the suspect were made over a squad car PA system. Before the dog and officers could begin a systematic search, the suspect came out of the construction site and was arrested
