Address700 block State St.
ArrestedTino B. Luu, age 38, Madison
Suspect was arrested for theft and disorderly conduct.
Victim(s)Male, age 23, Madison
DetailsA UW-Madison student, who just had his wallet stolen, punched the suspect in the face and was able to recover his property early this morning in the 700 block of State St.
The suspect had been asking for money, and the victim had given him dollar. The suspect could see the victim also had a $20 bill in his wallet, and asked for more cash. The 23-year-old student told the panhandler that was not going to happen and proceeded to walk off after placing his wallet in a plastic bag containing recent purchases.
The suspect followed the victim, coming up from behind and ripping the bag from the student's hand. The thief ran off, but was not fast enough. The victim caught the 38-year-old and delivered a blow. It sent the panhandler to the pavement, allowing the victim to recover the bag.
Police were called. The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment of a facial injury before being booked in the jail.
The victim told an officer he was studying for a test to be given this morning. Distraught, he was not sure he could now take the exam and wondered if the MPD would write him a note. The investigating officer provided him with a business card and a case number and that seemed to suffice.
