Update

On June 8, 2018, shortly after midnight MPD officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Hawthorne Ct. regarding an injured person.  Hawthorne Court is a service lane which runs from University Avenue to State Street. It is a compact alley abutted by the Frances Street and Lake Street parking ramps

First-responding officers encountered passersby who said, "The guy down there needs help". The officers were directed to the bloodied and disoriented victim. He was transported by MFD EMTs to a local hospital.

In the very early stages of this investigation, officers viewed video surveillance to find that the battery was captured on camera.  Although officers were not able to immediately identify the suspect, the video was crucial in establishing the severity of the event. Video also shows that the assailant acted alone but was in the company of others who watched and likely recorded the attack on their own phones.

Nine City of Madison closed circuit video cameras as well as additional privately held camera systems were instrumental in ultimately identifying the suspect in this case.  Video stills released internally to Madison police officers led one of our Central District officers to recognize and then identify the suspect within two days of the incident.

With significant investigative follow-up, detectives were able to piece together a timeline of events prior to, during and after the attack. Video evidence again corroborated witness statements that the victim was "ambushed". Social media postings also aided in identifying the person(s) involved.

24 year old Andrew J King of Verona was tentatively charged with 1 count of substantial battery.

The 23 year old victim suffered serious facial injuries, concussion and loss of consciousness

King offered investigators a statement which was inconsistent with the video. Neither King nor the victim knew each other nor had any known association prior to the battery.
