N. Park St.

Female, age 20, Madison

A student from Malaysia, who is studying in Madison, was bilked out of $2,000 this week after receiving a phone call from a number that appeared to be the MPD's non-emergency line: (608) 255-2345.

She was told she had not paid taxes and needed to come up with $7,800 or go to jail.

The victim said she did not have access to that much money. The "police officers" said they would allow her off the legal hook if she purchased Google Play gift cards and then provide them with the account numbers.

After she did this, callers claimed a police officer would be by in about 50 minutes to meet with her. When no one showed up, she realized she had been scammed.

The MPD received several similar complaints regarding our non-emergency number being spoofed by con artists.

"I figured it was a scam after I got over the initial scare, as neither person was a native English speaker," said one man who got a call and hung up.

The Malaysian student was not so fortunate. She was on the phone for a couple of hours before being hoodwinked.
