Incident Report for Case #2018-312247

Incident Type

Incident Date

08/14/2018 - 2:22 PM

2100 block of University Ave.

Edward I. Smith, age 35, Madison
Smith was arrested for battery and disorderly conduct.

A contractor, hired to install new carpets at a University Ave. apartment complex, was punched in the face by an angry former tenant who thought someone had just stolen items from the U-Haul truck he had rented.

When police were called, the suspect had already sped out of the parking lot in the U-Haul, clipping an ambulance that had come to assist the injured carpet layer, and striking two parked cars.

Many concerned citizens were able to point officers in the direction of the fleeing U-Haul, which was eventually pulled over near the corner of Regent St. and Speedway Rd. The driver was arrested for battery and disorderly conduct.

Apartment complex managers said he had been running around, screaming obscenities while confronting several people about items missing from his truck.

A second victim said the suspect poked a finger into his chest and assumed a boxer's stance. No fight took place, but the suspect soon threw the punch at the carpet installer. The encounter left the 54-year-old worker confused about what just happened. He suffered a swollen face and bloody lip.
