Incident Date10/04/2018 - 11:35 PM
AddressS. Whitney Way at Schroeder Road
Victim(s)Female, age 23, Madison
UpdateIt had been an exciting evening for a 28-year-old Madison man. He had traveled to sold-out Miller Park to witness the Brewers take game one of the National League Divisional Series with a walk-off RBI in the tenth.
He was now almost home and sitting at a red-light at the corner of S. Whitney Way and Schroeder Rd. That's when the night became even more memorable, for all the wrong reasons.
The baseball fan could see two men in a SUV - that was stopped behind him - start to move quickly. Suddenly he heard six to eight loud gunshots. Fearing for his life, he ducked down and floored his car through the intersection. Once out of harm's way, he called 911.
Another Madison man, age 31, was also at the intersection. He was on his way home from work when he saw an arm extend from the passenger side of the SUV and begin firing. He also ducked as the SUV drove off. Frightened, he waited where he was stopped for several moments to allow danger move on.
The 23-year-old victim – described in the original Incident Report - had also been stopped at the lights. It was her car that was hit. She drove quickly to the MPD's West District to report the incident.
The MPD's Violent Crime Unit is on the case. At least one shell casing was recovered at the scene in the darkness of night, and officers will be looking for more this morning.
It is not clear who the gunman was firing at. Fortunately no one was hit.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 266-6014.
