Incident Date10/11/2018 - 12:00 PM
Victim(s)Female, age 31, Madison
DetailsA Madison woman was bilked out of $8,800 after spending five hours on the phone with people she thought were FBI agents.
She had gotten a call on October 11th from "FBI deputy inspector Eddie Morra." He told her there was a warrant out for her arrest because her name and social security number had been used to open numerous bank accounts now associated with money laundering. On top of that, a vehicle rented in her name had been connected to an apartment where 22 pounds of cocaine had been recovered.
She was told she could prove she was "government safe" by going around and purchasing gift cards from various retailers. The "FBI" assured she would get the money back.
The victim said she was too scared to hang up and didn't want to go to jail.
When she finally called the MPD, and officer told her no federal official would ever use gift cards as a means of payment or confirmation.
The officer called the number that had been used by the "FBI." It had been disconnected. The victim said "Morra" spoke with – what sounded like – an Arabic accent.
