(ORIGINAL RELEASE FEB. 7)
Around 10:18 a.m. an off-duty Madison Police Detective was driving near the intersection of Badger Road and Cypress Way when the detective witnesses a shooting. There were two groups of young men involved. One group was gathered on one side of Cypress Way -- the other group was across the street. A member of one group pulled out a gun and fired several rounds across the road. One bullet struck an 18-year-old man. He was taken to a local hospital with a non-life threatening wound. The off-duty detective saw the gunman enter an apartment building located at the corner of Cypress and Badger Road. A perimeter was set up around the building. The Madison Police Department’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called in. ERT members slowly and methodically cleared the building around 3:00 p.m. two persons of interest in the shooting incident were taken peacefully from an apartment. Following the shooting nearby Lincoln Elementary School was placed in "lockdown" which --for the students -- meant no outside recess. Other than that normal school activities took place during the ERT call up. Any potential threat to the community was diffused prior to the school day ending.
