History of the Patch

To give a brief history, the patch of the Madison Police Department was authorized by the Madison Police and Fire Commission and became part of the official uniform August 1, 1963.

Madison's recognized status as a cultural and governmental center is signified by the replica of the Badger State's Capitol Building. This building boasts the second largest dome in the United States, and is only inches shorter than our Nation's Capitol in Washington D.C.

Known nationwide as one of America's most beautiful cities and in the midwest as the "City of the Four Lakes," Madison's great recreational potential is symbolized by silhouettes woven in blue conforming to the shoreline of Lakes Mendota and Monona, two of the larger lakes which are situated within a six block walk of the Capitol Square.

Sincerely,

Noble Wray
Chief of Police
