Spring Sweeping has started - The Street Division is running double shifts with their street sweepers in an effort to pick up the 15,000 tons of sand that was deposited on the streets during the winter months.

Crews are also in the process of sweeping off and brooming the acres and acres of concrete medians in the City, which have accumulated a winter's worth of sand and debris.

IMPORTANT DATES:
APRIL 1: Parks staff preparing athletic fields for league play, which begins April 1, IF THE WEATHER COOPERATES. Go to: Athletic Fields

MID-APRIL: Street Tree Planting will begin

APRIL 19: Volunteer for the Earth Day Challenge on April 19

MAY 1: Weather permitting, boat launch piers will all be out by May 1, opening day of fishing.

Mall/Concourse Staff: Sweeping streets and sidewalks, cleaning bus stops, and preparing flowerbeds.

East/West Parks Staff - Currently converting the equipment that was used for ice rink maintenance to mowing equipment. Staff is also removing, painting and storing hockey boards. Normally staff would be done with this by late March, but the winter season lasted much longer.

Forestry and Parks Staff: Picking up downed branches in the parks and boulevards. Checking for broken trees due to the large snow piles. Go to: Report a Tree Concern

Maintenance Facility staff: By the end of April, maintenance staff has the shelters open, the restrooms charged and the water turned on for the buildings and MOST of the drinking fountains. This process takes over a month, is time consuming, and is very weather dependant. If in the next few weeks, Madison suddenly has a very warm day, the restrooms may not yet be open due to the time consuming nature of this work. Staff will make accomodations for park users by placing port-a-pottys at some of the major park locations.

Staff will also start putting out boat launch piers as soon as the ice goes out of the lakes. Weather permitting, boat launch piers will all be out by May 1, opening day of fishing.

Graffiti: Taking care of the graffiti in the parks when possible. We need warmer temperatures to paint and for the cleaning chemicals to remove the graffiti. Go to: Report Graffiti
