DESIGN ALTERNATIVES SERIES #2
1. 200 Block: Existing Conditions ("Tabletop" Design). This photo is an example of an existing condition between the Civic Center and Orpheum Theater where there is no curb-- a "tabletop" design.
2. 500/600 Block: Minimal Curb Alternative. This illustration shows an alternative which incorporates a minimal (2"-3") curb to differentiate the street from the sidewalk.
3. Curb Alternatives Cross Sections. This cross section depicts three curb configuration options-- full (6") curb, minimal (2"-3") curb, and no curb ("tabletop"). One alternative could be utilized for the entire street, or combinations of the three could be used.
4. 300 Block View #1: Existing Conditions. This photo shows the existing conditions of this block with some of the clutter and immovable objects (such as the planter/bench) that are typical in the corridor.
5. 300 Block View #2: Flexible Approach. This illustrates how removing some of the clutter and fixed objects can open up the street and provide flexibility in what happens in the future.
6. Gilman Street View #1: Existing Conditions. This photo shows the current conditions on Gilman Street, which is typical of many of the side streets leading to State Street.
7. Gilman Street View #2: Design Alternative. This illustration shows how enhancing side streets, such as Gilman, can create an attractive pedestrian and business environment as a part of the concept to create a State Street district.
8. Special Places. This map highlights areas which could be enhanced as special places along the street. The narrowness of the street (66’ right-of-way) does not currently provide many options for creating gathering spots or places to take a break from the activities on the street. The areas identified on this map provide opportunities to create special designs that would allow pedestrians to enjoy the district in a distinctly different way.
9. Larger-Scale Trees. This illustration shows how incorporating larger-scale trees can help increase the open feeling of the street by "raising the ceiling" of the space. This would also allow the upper stories of the buildings to be seen more clearly and contribute to the character of the street.
10. Street Light Style Alternatives. This illustrates two different types of street lighting. One is a simple, more contemporary style. The other has a more historic feel.
11. Bus Shelter Alternatives. This illustrates a design direction for new bus shelters that are more transparent and "lighter" feeling than the current shelters.
