Initial Design Direction Series
1. Urban Open Space. This illustrates the basic concept that the Street is anchored by two prominent open spaces and State institutions; the University of Wisconsin and the State Capitol. The 100 and 700 blocks serve as welcoming transition spaces with a proposed mid-street open space helping to define a pattern of public spaces along the street.
2. Plan View of Existing Conditions. This illustrates some of the concerns expressed about the present design. These concerns include: a highly segmented street; too many pavement changes; heavy and permanent planters; big, dark and heavy bus shelters; and too much clutter in sidewalk area.
3. 100 Block View #1: Existing Conditions. This view is looking towards the Capitol in the 100 block of State Street.
4. 100 Block View #2: Curb Design Alternative. This view illustrates an alternative which incorporates curb and gutter providing demarcation between the sidewalk and street, and drainage.
5. 100 Block View #3: "Tabletop" Design Alternative. This view illustrates a proposed concept incorporating a continuous pavement and a "tabletop" design ("tabletop" is defined by having the sidewalk and street at the same level-- no curb and gutter). Pavement of contrasting color and texture provides demarcation between the sidewalk and street and drainage.
6. "Flex Street" Management Strategy. This illustrates how vehicular and pedestrian circulation and activity could be accomplished by utilizing a "tabletop" design in key areas. It also shows the proposed locations of bus shelters. This illustrates the concept to date on how the street will evolve.
