Design Elements: Public Art

Public Art

Public Art expresses and evokes a sense of place. It can be used to illuminate the history, meaning of and social and cultural connections of Madison's public places.

There are many public art opportunities to be found on State Street. The State Street Design Team is currently looking at opportunities that range from site-specific works along the Street to incorporating artwork into tree grates and newspaper kiosks.

Initial planning is underway to enhance the viewing / sight lines of the Brower Hatcher sculpture Forum of Origin, at the top of State Street. New donor plaques and some repairs of the sculpture are also being investigated. Across the way, at W. Mifflin Street, the idea of a 'philosophers grove' is being researched.  An area, leading to the library, with artist designed tables and chairs. Landscaping and furniture would offer a contemplative area, to sit quietly and read or gather with friends.

These are just a few of the ideas that are being explored. Please check back for updates and new opportunities.
