Computer Recycling

Old computers should not be placed at the curb for collection.
Computers contain many valuable components that can and should be recycled.
In addition, computers contain several heavy metals that ought to be kept out of the landfill.

Donations:
In the past, many people looked to donate their old computers to schools,
charities or non-profit organizations such as Goodwill or St. Vincent De Paul.
Unfortunately most of these organizations no longer accept used computers.

If you would like to donate an old computer, please call first to see if the organization of your choice will accept your machine.

Recycling:
Fortunately, there are several recycling and reuse options for your old computer equipment.

If you don't want to wait that long, there are other options:

  • Several computer manufacturers take back their old computers.

          Apple (www.apple.com/environment ) offers free recycling with a qualified
          purchase.

          Dell (www.dell.com) 1-(888) 576-3818 offers free recycling of all   
          Dell computer systems and components.

IBM (www.ibm.com/ibm/environment) 1-(888) 746-7426
IBM will accept any make or model of used computers and monitors for a fee of $29.99.

Gateway (www.gateway.com) 1-(800) 846-4208
Gateway will accept old computers and monitors as trade-in for the purchase of a new Gateway computer system. A pre-paid UPS shipping label is provided and the computer must be boxed and sent by the individual.

  • The Madison Recycling Center at 2100 Fish Hatchery Rd accepts all computers, computer components, and peripherals. The also accept consumer electronics. They charge $.35 per pound. For more information call them at 251-2115.
  • Resource Solutions at 5493 Express Circle, Madison, WI 53704, also takes computer components and peripherals for recycling. They too charge $.35 per pound. For more information call 244-5451.

There are several computer stores that accept old computers.
