Tips for Saving Tax Dollars

The Street Division is committed to providing every Madison household with quality solid waste services. Those services cost Madison property taxpayers over $11 million annually.

Each year the Street Division is called upon to serve 600 to 800 new households.
That is the equivalent of adding one and one half garbage truck routes each year.
As Madison continues to grow, the cost of providing solid waste services will increase as well.

The employees of the Street Division are constantly looking for ways we can handle our increased workload while keeping cost increases to a minimum. Changes include a new generation of recycling trucks that will allow us to handle new households without assigning added staff or vehicles. We have also changed the brush collection schedule to improve service and free staff for other assignments.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Madison residents can help lower the cost of solid waste services by doing a few simple things. If you follow these guidelines you can help our crews provide you with the most efficient service possible.

Brush Collection:

  • Do not place brush around trees, mail boxes or utility poles.
  • Stack your brush with the cuts ends facing the street or facing to the right as you face the street in front of your home.

Recycling Collection:

  • Make sure you get all of your recyclables inside your cart.
  • If you have too much material for your cart, hold it for the next collection when ever possible.
  • If you regularly have more material than will fit in your cart contact the the Streets Division at 267-2626 to arrange for a larger cart at no charge.
  • Put your recycling on one side of your driveway and your refuse on the other side.
  • Flatten your plastic bottles, cans, and boxes before you put them in your cart.

Refuse Collection:

  1. Have your material out on time: 6:00 a.m. on the east side and 7:00 a.m. on the west side.
  2. Place all of your material in the tan refuse cart.  Material not in the cart will not be collected.
  3. Try to get odd items like lamps, vacuums, end tables, lumber, etc. in your tan refuse cart if possible.  You can break up material to make it fit.
  4. Keep your cart four feet away from other carts, utility poles, mailboxes and trees.
