EAST SIDE WATER SUPPLY PROJECT (2010-2011)

In July 2010, Madison Water Utility (MWU) began the East Side Water Supply (ESWS) Project, a major water supply planning project that paired professional and scientific expertise with community engagement to recommend future infrastructure on Madison's East Side. In October 2010, a Citizen Advisory Panel (CAP) was formed for this project. The CAP met and advised MWU on public expectations for drinking water quality, water supply and demand, and water conservation.

On July 12, 2011, the CAP presented three advisories to the Water Utility Board:

• Water Demand on the East Side of Madison;
• Unit Wells 7 and 8, Iron and Manganese Management Options; and
• Water Conservation on the East Side of Madison.

 

On July 26, 2011 the Water Utility Board approved four recommendations, including the following:

Accept the recommendation of the East Side Water Supply Citizens Advisory Panel and staff to use an appropriate treatment technology to remove iron and manganese from Unit Well 8. Allow room for potential future treatment needs due to nearby sources of groundwater contamination. Continue the Public Participation Process with a Well 8 Citizens Advisory Panel through Phase 2 - Facility Site Selection and Phase 3 - Facility Design.

 

2009

Per recommendations of the well filtration report presented to the Water Utility Board in 2008, a water quality mitigation project was developed for Well 8. It was the Utility’s intent to evaluate several alternatives to improve the water quality produced by Well 8.

On March 24, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. at the Water Utility Administration offices at 119 East Olin Avenue, the Water Utility Board introduced and referred a resolution to establish the project. Following a public participation process, the Water Utility Board considered public input concerning Well 8 to determine if the project should be established.

Citizen Advisory Panel meetings were held on April 15 and April 27, 2009.

A Public Meeting regarding the Well 8 Iron and Manganese Mitigation Project was held at the Schenk Elementary School Cafeteria on 5/18/09.

A Public Hearing was held regarding the Well 8 Iron and Manganese Mitigation Project at the Water Utility Administration Building on 6/23/09. The board voted to establish the project.
