PROJECT UPDATES: Thursday, 05/29/08: Madison Water Utility Crews completed the remaining site work at Reservoir Park on Wednesday 5/28/08. A work order has been issued to Madison Gas & Electric to remove the de-energized transformer located near the radio tower. It is anticipated that the transformer will be removed within the next couple of weeks depending on MG&E's maintenance schedule. PREVIOUS UPDATES: Wednesday, 05/21/08: Sam's Well Drilling completed the abandonment of the test well at Reservoir park at approximately 2:00 PM on Tuesday 05/20/08. Water Utility crews will complete the remaining work during the week of May 26, 2008. Remaining work includes the removal of the disconnected electrical panel, removal of the plywood matting and security fencing, and seeding. Wednesday, 05/12/08: Due to unrelated emergency repair work Sam’s Well Drilling was not able to return to Reservoir Park as initially scheduled. Sam’s is anticipating to be on-site by late morning on Tuesday 05/13/08 to proceed with the test well abandonment. Wednesday, 05/07/08: Water Utility crews are scheduled to remove the pipe from under the sidewalk and repair the sidewalk, Friday, May 9, 2008. Sam’s Well Drilling is scheduled to return to Reservoir Park to begin the abandonment of the test well Monday 05/12/08 (weather permitting). The abandonment procedure includes removing the pump shaft, pump, pump electrical starter, and remaining mechanical equipment. When the equipment has been removed, the well will be filled with disinfected pea gravel and cement grout per Wisconsin DNR requirements. This work will require a pump pulling crane, trucks, and concrete trucks and equipment. A request to Madison Gas & Electric has been submitted to disconnect the electric panel service at the transformer. When the service is disconnected the electrical panel will be removed from the site. Once the abandonment is completed, topsoil will be applied and the area will be seeded. Abandonment procedures are expected to take approximately one week. Water Utility engineer Adam Wiederhoeft will be on site to monitor abandonment activities. Monday, 04/21/08: The draft final summary report on the testing and analysis of the Reservoir Park test well is now available. The report, prepared by Montgomery Associates in collaboration with RMT, Inc., summarizes tests conducted between July 2007 and March 2008 and provides conclusions based on the study. Friday, 03/14/08: Madison Water Utility commenced clean-up activities along Larkin St. upon after the final Water Quality sample this morning. The pump was turned off at approximately 11:00 AM. Clean-up activities included removing the driveway crossing plates, removing the discharge hose from the gutter, removing the barricades along Larkin St. and removing the snow bank along the discharge path. When weather allows, the Water Utility will return to remove the snow fencing and test well equipment located within Reservoir Park. Friday, 02/29/08: Water quality test results for the sample taken 02/27/08 are now available. The chloride tracer measured 18 mg/L. Per the motion passed at the 02/12/08 Water Utility Board meeting, this measurement suggests a significant decrease in chloride levels and subsequently it suggests a positive movement to isolating lower aquifer water.
Interim Madison Water Utility General Manager Larry Nelson has stated that due to the commitments that we have made, we will continue the test pumping until 03/14/08 to acquire the best data we can. Given the severity of this winter and the arrival of spring, we will be lucky to make it two more weeks. We acknowledge the inconveniences associated with these activities and we greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to complete this testing operation. Wednesday, 02/27/08: Water quality test results are now available for the tests taken on 02/14/08 and 02/21/08. The chloride tracer measurement has remained at 19 mg/L for the third week in a row. An additional water sample was taken earlier today with the lab results for the chloride level available as early as tomorrow. See the link below for more details. Friday, 02/21/08: Water quality test results for the sample taken on February 7th are now available. Current chloride tracer measurement is 19 mg/L. See the link below for more details. If the chloride tracer level measures 18 mg/L or lower by the end of February it would suggest the water being drawn from the lower aquifer is becoming less diluted and pumping would then continue until at least March 14, 2008. If the chloride tracer level continues to measure above 18 mg/L through the end of February, pumping operations will be stopped February 29, 2008. Friday, 02/15/08: Ongoing test pumping and weekly water quality sampling results continue to suggest that the water being pumped from the lower aquifer is diluted with water from the upper aquifer. The link below shows the updated water quality table with the 1/31/08 test results: A motion passed by the Water Utility Board on February 12, 2008 established that as a minimum the test pumping will continue until February 29, 2008. If the water quality test results received prior to the end of the month demonstrate a significant decline in the chloride tracer level indicating a positive movement toward obtaining a lower aquifer only water sample (a measurement less than or equal to 18 mg/L), pumping would continue until at least March 14, 2008. If the chloride levels have not been significantly reduced by February 29, 2008, pumping will be stopped. The link below is acopy of the project update letter that was mailed to residents of the Sunset Hills Neighborhood on 2/15/08: Friday, 01/25/08: Test well pumping and weekly water quality sampling continues at Reservoir Park. Water quality test results suggest that the water being pumped from the lower aquifer is still diluted with water from the upper aquifer. Please see the link below for the updated water quality table with the 01/10/08 test results: Tuesday, 01/08/08: Test well pumping is continuing beyond the originally estimated 70-day pumping duration. Weekly water quality test results suggest that the water being pumped from the lower aquifer is still diluted with water from the upper aquifer. Additional pumping could continue for several weeks before representative water from the lower aquifer is produced. The following information was mailed to residents of the Sunset Hills Neighborhood 01/08/07: Thursday, 10/18/07: The Water Utility is performing daily site evaluations and maintenance as testing operations progress. Wednesday, 10/17/07: Tuesday, 10/16/07: Monday, 10/15/07: Friday, 10/12/07: Tuesday, 10/09/07: Sam's Well Drilling continues to wait for the required parts shipment. The pump reinstallation and test pumping activities remain on standby status. The Water Utility is performing daily site evaluations and fence maintenance until Sam's Well Drilling.
