Project H20
Madison Water Utility is upgrading all customer water meters to a wireless technology network that will read and transmit water consumption on a daily basis. During 2012 and the first part of 2013, every home and business in Madison will be visited for either a new meter installation or retrofit of the existing meter.

Benefits of the new metering system:

  • Enables customers to track their own consumption and be alerted to costly leaks.
  • Eliminates the need for a water meter reader to visit your premises.
  • Provides an energy efficient, accurate, and cost effective way for Madison Water Utility to read water meters.
  • Helps the utility operate our entire system more efficiently with accurate consumption data.

ContractorCorix UtilitiesThe work will be done by neighborhoods, beginning with an initial pilot phase of 700 addresses in the northeast section of the city. Customers will be contacted by mail to arrange an installation appointment. Check the installation schedule map to see when installations will begin in your area.

Installations by the contractor Corix Utilities will be by appointment. In most cases, installations should usually take no longer than 30 minutes and will not interrupt your water service. An adult resident at least 18 years old must be present.

Employees and contractors involved with the project will be identified by photo IDs with the Project H2O logo, as will their work vehicles.

There is no charge to the customer for the installation.

Project H2O is already saving customers water and money through improved leak detection. See NBC 15's story which aired on April 1, 2013 for details: Smart Water Meters Spot Leaks in Madison.

The new system will use radio frequencies (RF) to transmit meter readings. While we believe the use of this technology is extremely safe, some customers may choose not to have a transmitter inside their home. MWU's opt-out policy offers two options: have the transmitter installed on the outside of the building, or not have it installed on the property at all.
