Water Main Flushing Program:
Flushing of the distribution system removes accumulation of mineral deposits (usually iron and manganese) that may occur in water mains. Fire hydrants are opened in sequence and the water allowed to run at full force to flush out such material until the flushed water is clear. If water is drawn into a property's plumbing during or soon after hydrant flushing work has been done in an area, the water may include dislodged materials and look discolored. If this happens the discolored water can be cleared by opening the cold, hard-water taps nearest the water meter to full flow until the water runs clear. Discolored water should not be used for drinking or cooking, and it should not be used for laundry. To find out more...
Lead Replacement Program:
In February, 2000, Madison's lead water service line replacement Ordinance (MGO Section 13.18) went into effect. The Ordinance requires that all lead water service lines in the city be replaced by January, 2011. The requirement applies to both (1) the Utility-owned service line extending from the water main in the street to the curb stop box and (2) the customer-owned service leading from the curb box to the customer's water meter. Water Utility crews, in coordination with customers and their plumbers, are systematically replacing the Utility-owned lead service lines in the water system. When the Utility replaces the lead service line from the water main to the curb box, property owners are required to replace the lead service line on their private property. Property owners are notified by mail when lead service replacement is scheduled for their area. To find out more...
