Narrative-Several streets and intersections were flooded early Monday morning as strong storms passed through the area. Here's a roundup of emergency calls undertaken by the Madison Fire Department's west-side companies: 1:35 a.m. – Mineral Point Road & Junction Road

A couple was stranded in their vehicle amid swift-moving water at the intersection of Mineral Point Road and Junction Road. Upon arrival, Engine 12 found the couple inside their stalled vehicle with ankle-deep water flowing around them. Firefighters helped them out of the vehicle. Because it wasn't safe to leave them outside in the severe storm, firefighters escorted them to the fire truck and gave them a ride a few blocks away to a friend's house. Schmidt's towing was asked to retrieve the stalled vehicle from the intersection.
 
2:05 a.m. – 300 block N. Midvale Blvd.

Engine 9 came to the aid of a car stranded in the flooded street. The driver was safe inside the vehicle which was disabled due to high waters. Firefighters pushed the car to higher ground and arranged for a tow truck to assist the driver.

 2:29 a.m. – 1200 block McKenna Blvd.

Engine 7 responded from Fire Station 7 for the report of a person trapped in a vehicle that was flooding on Gammon Road, near Elver Park and Gammon Lane.

Upon arrival, Engine 7 found four different vehicles stalled in the same area: Two traveling northbound and two traveling southbound. Engine 7 made contact with two of the vehicles and assisted occupants out. Ladder 7 returned from another call and helped Engine 7 make contact with the other motorists.

None of the people in the flood reported any injuries or need for medical assistance. They were all advised to clear their vehicles and retreat to a safe spot. They walked to a nearby gas station.

Firefighters remained on location to keep people from entering the hazardous area. Traffic was diverted to Hammersley from the south and Gammon Lane from the north.

Approving temporary construction work with associated noise impacts between the hours of 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM on CTH M between Cross Country Road to Prairie Hill Road.

The City of Madison Board of Public Works held a public hearing on the issue of allowing construction activities, with associated noise impacts, outside the period of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM for work on CTH M between Cross Country Road to Prairie Hill Road. The Public Hearing, held on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, 5:30 PM, City County Building, 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Room 321. Madison General Ordinance Section 24.08(3) provides the Common Council the ability to allow construction activities outside of the hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. with the passage of a resolution and a hearing before the Board of Public Works. As you are all aware, The Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans reconstruct the roadway to an urban roadway with four (4) to six (6) vehicular travel lanes, two (2) on-road bike lanes, curb and gutter, sidewalk, multi-use path, street lighting, and a curbed, grassed median. We propose to allow the Contractor to work between the hours of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. The work taking place on this project cannot be constructed between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM because:

Intersection work and utility installation across the roadway must be completed at night to minimize the amount of disruption to normal daily traffic and increases the likelihood of completing the project within the expedited schedule allowed.

Neighborhood Plans

Neighborhood plans are developed by City of Madison urban planners, who work closely with community members to generate ideas on how best to accommodate anticipated growth within established areas.  Plan topics include land use, zoning, mobility, housing, community services, economic development, historic preservation, urban design, open space, health, safety, and infrastructure.

WHAT IS A NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN?

Neighborhood plans serve as a guide for actions and changes that will strengthen Madison's established neighborhoods. These plans are prepared by City of Madison urban planners working in concert with steering committees made up of residents and business people. Neighborhood plans are a framework for physical redevelopment that include short and long-term strategies to address specific challenges, issues and opportunities in Madison's established neighborhoods.
