Building Community Safety: Person to Person

SUNDAY, AUGUST 13, 2017 at 8:00 PM

Dear Neighborhoods-

Yes, we have been faced outright with our own challenges here in our own city. Yes, black, brown or white; we have all been outraged by the senseless violence we have  witnessed over the past several months. Yes, the violence must stop. BUT those who stand for hate, discord and disregard for human life cannot, must not and should not be tolerated by us.  Silence is consent. It does not have to be this way. Let's stand together to say NO MORE. The vigil tonight is not designed to be a political rally.  It is a swell of good people joining together to say that this senseless  hate and violence WILL NOT BE TOLERATED AND MUST STOP!!

I will join my Emerge Sisters tonight, Sunday, August 13th, 8 pm, at the Wisconsin State Capitol, for a candlelight vigil. Those that can, those that will please join me.

AGAIN!**This is not a political rally; it is a show of respect for the fallen.**

This weekend, hate groups and domestic terrorists of all stripes went to Charlottesville, VA, to push their dangerous message of white supremacy, fascism, anti-Semitism, and bigotry.

When they got to Charlottesville, they waged violence on unarmed anti-racists, killing at least one and injuring many others. Two police officers monitoring the activity were also killed in a crash. We mourn the lives that were lost, and we will honor all those under attack by congregating against hate in our own community.

On Sunday, Indivisible, Wisconsin Progressive Alliance, Dane Dems, and other local groups, along with national sponsors Women's March, Democracy for America, Working Families Party, Resist Here, and Progressive Change Campaign Committee will come together in solidarity with our brave friends in Charlottesville who put themselves at risk to fight Nazism and white supremacy. Many local organizations plan to stand in solidarity tonight!!

One of the neo-nazi demonstrators drove a vehicle into a crowd of anti-racism demonstrators, killing one. Two Virginia state troopers lost their lives when their helicopter crashed en route to the demonstration.

In 2017, this openly demonstrated hate has taken a firm hold in our country. We all have a right to enjoy our faith and our religious practices AND we all  have the right to live free of persecution.

I join Mayor Soglin and my Common Council colleagues in our collective abhorrence of the events in Charlottesville yesterday and we will continue to work to make Madison a great City to live for all people.

Registration: 6:00 pm.

Welcome & Panel Introductions 6:30 pm

Dear Neighbor:
This year the Madison Community has had to have some very difficult conversations about the role of police in our City, public safety and more fundamentally, how we live together as neighbors.
Adding to this often intense debate is the alarming rise in violent crimes, racial disparities, seemingly increasing numbers of homeless persons, and the high unemployment rate, particularly among our most vulnerable populations.

On Saturday, May 20, District1 residents were invited to have "Breakfast with the Alder" where we enjoyed  a catered breakfast and engaged in deep and often challenging conversations: gang violence, drugs, fear, employment opportunities, trauma, shots fired, community resources, affordable housing, education, parenting styles, conflict resolution and values. We committed to continue to go deeper.
I am committed to working with you to build a safe and respectful climate, increase trust and find opportunities for all of us to participate in making the City of Madison the best place to live
You and your family are invited to a facilitated panel discussion that will include representatives from the community, school district, City government and law enforcement. There will be table discussions and time to ask questions following the discussion.  I hope you are able to attend.

Location:  Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1701 McKenna Blvd, Madison WI 53711
