Street Department Update

October 31, 2019 8:05 AM

Please Sign-up To Receive "Snow Alerts" directly from the Streets Division.

Good morning, everyone:

Last night around midnight, Streets Division snow plows hit the streets.  When our plows are dispatched, we send out an email blast called a "snow plow update" to a list of subscribers so people can be aware of our operations, and also some notice about what to expect from the roads.

Many of you are probably on this email list already, but if you are not, now may be a good time to join so you can receive these messages.  You can sign up for these alerts at www.cityofmadison.com/winter.

Residents can sign up for these alerts as well. In fact, the winter website has a few different alerts people can register to receive. They can receive email and/or text alerts about snow emergencies. They can get alerts about when to shovel their sidewalks, too. Below in purple is the plow update that was sent out right around 5am for what we did this evening. If you have any questions, let me know: The Streets Division deployed snowplows around midnight in response to the overnight snow storm. Morning commuters must be sure to exercise caution as conditions may be slippery.

The Streets Division dispatched 32 plow trucks to apply salt and plow the salt route network of streets.  These are the main thoroughfares of Madison, Madison Metro bus routes, and the roads around schools and hospitals. The salt route network accounts for nearly half of all Madison streets and these are the only streets that receive salt. Those on the roads Thursday morning are encouraged to make good choices on their commute. When on snow-covered roads, everyone must be slow, patient, and safe. Brake early to allow for extra stopping distance. And allow for extra travel time in order to arrive at your destination safely.

Again, be slow, patient, and alert on all roads in Madison. Even on salt routes, slick spots may develop. Untreated residential streets are likely to be snowy and slippery. Also consider that the previous snow event this week caused many terrace trees to drop their leaves into the roadway. Neighborhood streets that have a thick layer of leaves under the snow can be even more slippery.

As a reminder, the Streets Division does not plow every street in Madison unless three or more inches of snow have accumulated on the roads. Streets Division staff will continue to monitor the roads throughout the day.
