What is meant by Public Engagement?

Public engagement describes the myriad of ways in which the activity and benefits of issues can be shared with the public. Engagement is by definition a two-way process, involving interaction and listening with the goal of generating mutual benefit.

Why is Public engagement important?

Public engagement can increase the accountability and transparency, help respond to social needs locally, nationally, globally and help to build trust and mutual understanding.

What is a Public engagement strategy?

A good public engagement strategy addresses the same questions that any effective strategy attends to address:

• Clarify the purpose of the strategy --WHY IT MATTERS?
• Clarifies the context
• Sets a clear direction of travel
• It is important not to 'rush' the writing of a strategy or do it behind closed doors. By approaching the process in an open, interactive way and by involving a range of people from varying  prospectives, the process can deliver a lot of 'buy in' to the result, and ensure the strategy draws on a variety of perspectives and expertise. Metro Transit Network Redesign

Metro Redesign - Metro Transit is completely redesigning its service in 2023. The goal of the redesign is to provide frequent and more direct service, better access to jobs, and make the system overall easier to use. This complete reboot of service is also necessary to schedule routes around Metro's future bus rapid transit system that will go into effect in 2024.

Metro staff presented an update on the proposed Metro Transit Network Redesign at Transportation Policy and Planning Board on Monday, May 16th, and a Community Public Hearing on Thursday, May 19th. You can watch both videos here.

On Tuesday, May 31, Metro Transit and the City of Madison Transportation Policy and Planning Board will hold a public hearing at 6 PM to discuss the proposed network redesign expected to go into effect June of 2023.

Why now?

• Address long-standing issues and discrepancies

• Recover from COVID-19 in a way that reflects future needs

• Compliments BRT and brings some of those benefits to more neighborhoods

Transit Network Redesign

Basic Goals for Public Transportation

• Ridership concentrates transit service onto fewer routes with more frequent service, ultimately increasing ridership
• Coverage extends transit service to as many people as possible regardless of frequency

Policy Direction

1. Ridership, definitely. Minor corrections only.
2. Ridership, mostly. Some lower frequencies to reach a few more places.
3. Coverage, mostly. Just a little less coverage to so we can get a few higher frequencies.

Transportation Policy and Planning Board Direction –

Key Take-Aways

• Bus routes will be designed to be longer, straighter, and more frequent.
• Transfer points will be eliminated, eliminating unnecessary delays and indirection.
• The system overall will be far simpler, more logical, and easier to use.

• Staff held more than 50 community outreach meetings
• We've received more than 3,100 survey responses and feedback emails

• Support for more of a coverage model vs. ridership
• People have to walk farther, especially in winter
• Service doesn't go into neighborhoods

NEW SYSTEM: Prevent Cluttered Neighborhoods –

LARGE ITEM GUIDELINES

Thanks to your participation in the new system – we received over 8,500 work orders in 2022 alone - we were able to make these significant savings and efficiencies.

However, we do hear concerns from residents who say their neighborhoods feel more cluttered than before.

You can help with this and keep our neighborhoods tidy by following these two important guidelines:

• 1. Make the work order BEFORE setting items out for pickup.

There is a limit to the number of work orders that can be scheduled in a single week.

If you set the items out and then make the work order, you may miss the next upcoming collection opportunity.

This could result in your items sitting out at the road edge for longer than necessary.

• 2. Set large items out on the date you picked in the work order.

When you submit a large item work order, you are choosing the date when you should set items out for pickup.

You are not choosing the date when the items will be collected. Collection will occur during the work week following the set-out date you selected.

If you set the item out early, it will remain on the curb too long. And if you set it out late, you may miss your collection opportunity.
