Snow Plowing Updates

The City of Madison is due another dose of rain, sleet, and ice that will make driving conditions slick. Cautious driving is advised on all streets, especially in residential areas. Also, the morning commute could be slippery. The Streets Division has a plan in place to help manage the issues, but there will be problem areas.

On January 6, crews will be out applying the anti-icing brine to the major city thoroughfares to help mitigate the anticipated icy conditions. The brine will help prevent the ice from binding to the pavement.

Once the wintry mix begins, we will have 32 crews deployed to service the City's salt routes. Our salt routes are the main arterials, main connector streets, streets that Madison Metro runs on, and streets around schools and hospitals. Crews will also apply sand to residential hills, curves, and intersections as needed.

Drivers, and bicyclists, are strongly urged to use an abundance of caution, especially on the residential streets where a hard pack of snow remains from the last storm. The predicted rains will wash away the sand previously applied for traction, plus it could freeze as temperatures drop. This will result in very slick conditions.

Please be cautious, safe, and patient on the roads in the coming days. Make good winter commuting choices by planning for longer travel times, allowing for extra distance when stopping, and following all other safe winter driving techniques.

Streets Division staff will continuously monitor conditions and future updates will be provided.
