Snow Plowing Updates

Snow Plowing Updates
by Chris Kelley, Streets Superintendent
posted January 26, 2016 6:59 AM
The city of Madison will be plowing all residential streets today, but there is no snow emergency.

The Streets Division and our contractors will begin plowing the streets at 7am. Our combined snow plow force out today will be approximately 170 pieces of equipment. We anticipate it will take 10 to 12 hours to clear all residential streets curb-to-curb. Refuse and recycling operations will not be affected, however other Streets Division services, such as large item collection, may be delayed.

Even though there is no declared snow emergency, residents are encouraged to abide by alternate side parking rules in the Snow Emergency Zone in order to assist with our snow plow operations. As always during the winter, alternate side parking rules are still in affect outside of the Snow Emergency Zone. Remember that fewer obstacles along the curb, such as parked cars or refuse and recycling cart, means a more complete and faster plowing operation.

Since the Streets Division maintained our salt routes throughout the night, the main streets remain in good winter driving condition, but some wet, slippery spots persist, especially in intersections. Caution and patience are recommended.

While residential streets are being cleared, temporary windrows may impede access to side streets. Also, since we are plowing all streets, driveways to residences may be blocked with a windrow when residents return home from work this evening.

Streets Division staff will monitor conditions as they change throughout the day. Crews will likely stay on through the evening to continue working on cleaning up from this storm. Everyone is encouraged to make good choices by planning for extra travel time, allowing extra braking distance, and following all other safe winter driving techniques.

Willy Street Co-op in talks on Pierce's Northside site
MADISON, Wis. (January 25, 2016) – Local grocery cooperative Willy Street Co-op is pleased to announce that it is in talks to open a new location at 2817 N. Sherman Ave., the current site of Pierce's Northside Market. To date, the co-op has not signed a lease on the site and the plans are not finalized. Willy Street Co-op owners approved pursuing a third retail site in August 2014.
The end date of Pierce's lease on this site has not been announced, but it will likely be early this summer. With talks ongoing, an opening date for a possible Willy Street Co-oplocation is not yet set. If a deal is reached, the co-op would aim to open at the site as soon as possible, according to co-op Communications Director Brendon Smith.
The Northside Planning Council learned of the lease's ending in September 2015 when it appeared that no other grocer was forthcoming. The organization met with several community leaders and Alder Rebecca Kemble to convene a grocery steering team to explore the possibility of opening a grocery cooperative. A similar organizing effort had been undertaken in 2003 and resulted in the founding of the Northside Farmers' Market.
