RESPONSE SENT TO ALL ALDERS -WORTH SHARING

My message for tonight's Common Council Mtg, July 19.

Dear Alders,

I am unable to attend.

I align NOT with any particular side of the issue nor group of stakeholders, but rather with what is needed for all tonight...
...to listen deeply,
...to speak your truth from the heart in a way that's most accessible to be heard, without causing fear or disgust in self and others,
...to calm sarcasm.

A new day is here in our history of evolution as a people; let's behold this as opportunity vs. as stalemate.  For police I think it means to be first responders who are NOT defined by the lethal force option, and leaving nothing common sense, and merciful, untried.  I am speaking of setting aside the initial tools on the scene of giving fearful commands and demands, and instead using calming communication tools in the de-escalation tactics.  I am also strongly urging highly trained mental health officers as first responders in all mental health kinds of calls.

May we be lifted.

Thank you.
Susan Shepanek

District 1 Constiuents:

Over 40 citizens registered to speak at the Common Council meeting last night. It was a highly emotional experience during the public comments when citizens voiced their opinions about the petition to support police. I recommend that you view the Council Meeting proceedings on the City Channel.

ACTION: The petition was referred to the Mayor's Office. The Mayor and Council Leafership will be discussing the petition and the National League of Cities iniative.

Member Alert

The National League of Cities (NLC) is working with the White House and the U.S. Conference of Mayors to encourage local officials to convene 100 community conversations on race relations, justice, policing and equality.

As part of our efforts to support the local leaders on this call to action, we are compiling a list of cities that are currently hosting or planning to host these community conversations. If you are planning to convene a meeting, please contact REAL at real@nlc.org.

REAL, Race Equity and Leadership, is NLC's effort to equip its membership with the capacity to respond to racial tensions in their communities and address the historical, systemic and structural barriers that further inequity and racism in our nation's cities.

Please let us know if you are interested in receiving support from REAL. NLC's support and consultation to city's interested in hosting these conversations include:

·       framing this dialogue effectively around the local issues you have prioritized;

·       developing an agenda to engage a diverse range of stakeholders (i.e., elected officials, police, clergy, civil rights groups, millennial activists, business and other stakeholders)

·       identifying potential facilitation support that will be critical to ensuring community-level conversations are constructive, productive and focused on positive outcomes for moving forward

We look forward to hearing about the efforts you have already undertaken since the events two weeks ago and discussing how NLC can be more helpful.
