PSRC

I have served on the The Public Safety Review Committee (PSRC) since 2015. The duties of this committee: The PSRC shall be advisory to the mayor and Common Council to assist them in the performance of their statutory duties. The PSRC may review and make recommendations concerning departmental budgets; review service priorities and capital budget priorities of the Police and Fire Departments; serve as liaison between the community and the city on public safety issues; and review annually and make recommendations to the Common Council regarding the annual work plans and long-range goals of the departments. My email was to highlite the critical work of the PSRC.  

However, my email to Brenda Konkel, Chair of the PSRC and committee members was shared and posted on Twitter.  I take my seat on the Council as your elected representative with great responsibility and have never shirked that work as a public servant. SPECIAL COMMON COUNCIL COMMITTEE MEETING

Madison City Council will decide on over 40 recommendations made by a special task force on government structure. Two of these recommendations -- reducing the council by half and doubling the term of alders -- would require approval from voters. 

The Alders met as a Committee of the Whole meeting, to discuss what steps to take next regarding changes to the size and structure of local government.  

An 11-member Task Force on Government Structure extensively studied over two years the composition of Madison's local government, powers and duties of the mayor and City Council, and the large number of boards, commissions and committees in the city.

Among the 42 changes, the task force recommended that the city transition from a part-time, 20-member City Council to one that is full-time and has 10 members who earn $67,950 per year. Alders are currently paid $13,570 for their work, the council president and vice president earn $16,513 and $14,460, respectively. 

Drive-Thru Flu Clinic for People Without Insurance

There is concern that the flu season overlapping with the COVID-19 pandemic could cause a "twindemic," causing many people to get very sick, and overwhelming our hospitals.

If you do not have health insurance, Public Health Madison & Dane County is now offering a drive-thru flu shot clinic.  The clinic, which opened October 6 at Alliant Energy Center, is for Dane County adults who do not have health insurance and children who have BadgerCare or Medicaid.

Operating Budget

The Mayor's operating budget can be found here. (To review the Mayor's summary, please click here.) Among the highlights is a first phase mental health ambulance service along the lines of the CAHOOTS program in Eugene OR.  Additionally, the Mayor's budget calls for increased investment in violence prevention, centering this work in Public Health and working collaboratively with Dane County to address this area of growing concern. 

The Finance Committee completed deliberations on the Operating Budget Tuesday evening, and the complete Budget, both Operating and Capital, will be voted on by Common Council Nov 10 – 12.

West District Community Conversations

The next West District Community Conversations will be hosted by Alder Zachary Henak, District 10. Guests will be the Finance Director and the discussion of the 2021 budget.  A flyer with the link will be shared this week. Update from Captain Patton, West District Police on shots fired Tuesday evening 10/14/2020

Vehicles drive from Southwest Side after gunshots, Madison police say 

Vehicles drove from a scene on the Southwest Side after gunshots rang out Tuesday night, Madison police reported.

Several callers reported hearing gunshots near the intersection of Raymond Road and Prairie Road and then several vehicle driving away shortly before 8:45 p.m.. Lt. Kipp Hartman said in a statement.

Officers located six spent shell casings in the road and recovered one bullet, Hartman said.  No property damage was found and no injuries were reported.

West PD Captain's Advisory group

West District Community Partners,

Please introduce me to community members who might be interested in shaping West PD priorities and strategies in furtherance of our mission and specifically our core values of community partnership, proficiency and continuous improvement.

We are looking to add members to the West PD Captain's Advisory Group and I am hoping you might be able to connect me with one or two interested individuals. For context, I have included the recommendation related to this initiative from the 2019 Madison Police Department Policy and Procedure Review Ad Hoc Committee Final Report at the bottom of this message.

The current West PD group includes Sheray W, Jerry F, John P, Saad K, Calvin S and myself. We have one potential new member who will join us in November. Mike A works for MMSD and was recently hired as a community safety worker in the CBCR grant area. We currently meet every other month, typically on a Monday evening for 2 hours. In this group, we discuss current events, MPD staffing and budget, district priorities and debrief calls for service with the goal of improving future call response. The group has implemented initiatives intended to improve the relationship between WPD personnel and the community we serve.

The current group is active and engaged and we are interested in bringing additional voices to our discussions. Neighborhoods represented include Walnut Grove, Meadowood and Greentree. I am specifically interested in adding individuals with experience in any of the following areas: 

  • exposure and/or experience with the criminal justice system and MPD call response  
  • renters and landlords  
  • experience with homelessness  
  • individuals who work in the district  
  • juniors or seniors at Memorial HS, students at Madison College and UW Madison  
  • residents involved with their neighborhood associations and the neighborhood resource teams  
  • residents from Park Edge Park Ridge, Wexford, Madison West Neighborhood, and any other neighborhoods not currently represented  
  • anyone interested in ongoing discussions on policing in Madison
