Jan 11 Winter Weather Road Conditions

January 11, 2018 2:24 PM

The Streets Division will dispatch 33 crews to maintain the salt routes and sand first areas during tonight's winter event.  Crews will maintain their routes through the after-work rush hour and into the evening. Current forecasts show the snow may linger late into the night, so a fresh deployment of personnel will be dispatched at midnight if conditions require it in order to maintain the routes in advance of the Friday morning commute.
Streets Division staff will be monitoring the roads, temperature, and forecasts carefully to be certain that operations match conditions. At the start of the snow for the after-work rush, temperatures are expected to be warm enough to allow for salt to be used as needed on the salt routes. As a reminder, salt routes are the main thoroughfares, Madison Metro routes, and roads around schools and hospitals.  As the storm wears on and changes, Streets Division operations will adjust to respond in kind.
All roadway users should exercise good winter commuting choices tonight and also tomorrow morning. As wet weather transitions to snow and the temperature drops, slick spots may develop throughout Madison, especially in residential areas. Please remember to be slow, alert, and patient in order to arrive at your destinations safely. Allow for additional braking distance and travel minutes on your way through the city tonight, and for tomorrow morning's commute, too.
