Snow Updates, 3/5/17

March 5, 2018 2:46 PM

Hello! As of 2:30PM, snow is starting to fall on the west side! Snow and winds will could contribute to dangerous road conditions during the evening commute.

Also, from Madison Streets:

"When the snows begin later Monday, the Streets Division will deploy 32 crews to maintain the salt routes. Crews will remain on these routes throughout the evening commute, into the overnight hours, and will stay on these routes for as long as the storm requires. As a reminder, the salt routes are the only streets in Madison that receive salt. These roads are the major thoroughfares of Madison covering Metro bus routes, roads around schools and hospitals, and other important arterial and connector streets.

Forecasts show this could be a long storm, potentially lasting into Wednesday, with some periods of heavy snow and high winds late Monday evening. Everyone is encouraged to be cautious on their travels through the city starting with tonight's evening commute.

Travel throughout the day on Tuesday and during the morning on Wednesday could be impacted, so be sure to plan accordingly. Remember to be slow, patient, and alert as roads may be slippery. Allow for extra stopping distance and travel time in order to arrive at your destinations safely.

The recent dose of warm weather has the pavement temperatures above freezing, which will likely melt some of the initial snow. These wet areas can also turn slippery, so be sure to keep making good choices by being slow and patient. Roadway users, especially in residential areas that are less-traveled than the main streets, will eventually encounter snow-covered roads starting probably sometime Monday evening once the pavement temperatures dip below freezing.

Finally, when it is actively snowing keep in mind that work performed by salt route crews will be covered over, and remain covered, until the driver can complete another lap through their route. Also, remember that the Streets Division does not plow all city streets until three or more inches of snow have accumulated on the roads, and the storm is at or near its end.

Streets Division staff will keep a watchful eye on the weather and the roads throughout this event. Operations will adjust to meet whatever challenge the weather gives, and future updates will be provided."
