Snow Plow Update, November 16

November 16, 2018 1:33 PM

The following message is from the Streets Division, regarding the FIRST snowfall (with accumulation)

Winter may have started a little early this year, but the Streets Division is ready for it.
Forecasts predict snowfall will begin late Friday evening and last through Saturday morning. Once the snow begins to accumulate on the roads, the Streets Division will deploy 32 trucks to plow and salt the designated salt routes of Madison. Two additional trucks will be deployed to spread sand in sand first areas.
Salt routes are the major thoroughfares of Madison, like Madison Metro bus routes and roads around hospitals. Salt routes comprise roughly 50% of all of the traffic lanes of Madison. The sand first areas are other hills, curves, and intersections that do not qualify as salt routes, but still need some material during winter events. Sand on the roads will help provide traction.
Crews will remain deployed on the salt routes and sand first areas through the entirety of the storm.
Commuters overnight Friday and into Saturday morning are encouraged to make good choices and be slow, patient, and cautious. Be sure to brake early and allow extra stopping distance, and be sure to plan for additional travel time so you can arrive at your destinations safely.
Slippery conditions can develop during active snowfalls, even on salt routes. When roads cleared by salt route crews become covered by fresh snow, they will remain covered until the plow can make another loop through their route. Residential areas that are untreated during active snowfalls are likely to be slippery as well.
As a reminder, the Streets Division will not plow all City of Madison streets until three or more inches of snow have accumulated on the roads and the storm is at or near its end.
Streets Division staff will be monitoring conditions throughout the storm. Additional updates will be provided as conditions merit.
