Proposed Wheel Tax

Hello Neighbors,

I thank you all for your patience the last few weeks, as I dealt with a family emergency. I am still catching up on correspondance and am working hard to make sure I get back to everyone who reached out while I was away.

The proposed wheel tax in Mayor Satya Rhoades-Conway's 2020 Budget has been the subject of question and concern from many of you. 

This solution is far from ideal, however, the State of Wisconsin has been issuing very strict, and ever-tightening limits on municipalities and how we are allowed to raise revenue. In addition, a combination of state aids that cities recieve have not increased since 2005, and limitations on property tax increases below inflation have made it difficult for cities across the state to maintain necessary services. 

Seven cuts to the budget were proposed and deliberated on at last week's Finance Committee meeting, and all seven failed. Even if they had passed, they still would not have covered the $7.9 million raised by the Wheel Tax. 

I want to link to Alder Furman's blog post about the topic, as it is very well written, thoroughly researched and supported by many documents. I am of the same mind that he is, that this is a less than ideal solution, but one we need to make. Please click here to read through the specific details of the proposal.
