Segoe Road speed limit will change from 30 mph to 25 mph in October

July 25, 2022 4:29 PM

The Wisconsin State Journal recently ran a story by Lucas Robinson about the city's plan to reduce the speed limit on several streets, including one street in District 11. Beginning early October, Segoe Road will see a change in the speed limit as part of the City's Vision Zero initiative. The posted speed limit on Segoe Road will change from 30 mph to 25 mph. Segoe Road is an important commercial and residential area that includes a key bike connection, new mixed-use development, schools and numerous parks all along the corridor. Lowering the speed limit even 5 mph helps ensure the safety of all who use our city streets especially children and people walking or biking.

Driving at or below 25 mph decreases stopping distance, gives drivers more time to see pedestrians and bikers, as well as decreases the chance of serious injury or a fatality in a crash. Vehicle stopping distance improves by 45 feet or 23% when traveling at 25 mph versus 30 mph. This is another step in the right direction towards preventing crashes from occurring.

However, changing the speed limit is just one part of the Vision Zero Initiative. Other infrastructure changes are also happening throughout the City. Projects funded in 2022 include a planned pedestrian island at Segoe & Richland to enhance the current crossing at this location. In 2023, a planned resurfacing project from University Ave to Regent St will also provide an opportunity to make additional infrastructure changes to support the new speed limit and to further improve accommodations for walking and biking.

When Segoe Rd is reduced, the City will install new 25 mph signs and place digital signboards temporarily to remind drivers of the speed limit changes.
