Several city meetings, Mayoral Candidate Forum in District 11 on 1/30, a Biden shout-out, Call for local artist, snow plow naming contest ending this week, and much more this week.

Common Council Executive Committee: The Common Council Executive Committee meets virtually Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 5:30 PM. Agenda items include an update on the Common Council Social Media Pilot and an update on the structure of the Boards, Commissions, and Committees (BCC).

Board of Health for Madison and Dane County: The Board of Health for Madison and Dane County meets virtually Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 5:30 PM. Agenda items include a Director's update on communicable disease and a Violence Prevention update.

Humanitarian Award Commission, Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.: The Humanitarian Award Commission, Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. meets virtually Monday, January, 30, 2023 at 6:00 PM. Agenda items include a debrief of the King Coalition Program and the 2023 nomination & selection process.

Events

• Celebrate Black History Month at Madison Public Library: February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of the achievements by African Americans and a time to honor the central role of black Americans throughout history and in the present day. • Learn About the East and West Area Plans that includes portions of District 11

Planning efforts are underway by the City of Madison to help shape the future of our West and Northeast neighborhoods. It's part of a larger initiative to build better communities through the City's recently approved Planning Framework. The Northeast Area Plan and West Area Plan (District 11) will be the first under this new model that will ultimately cover the entire city. Guided by overarching City policies and feedback from stakeholders, these Area Plans will guide physical changes that occur over time in our community such as land use, housing, transit, streets, bike paths, and other community facilities. • West Area Plan Public Meetings
  • Virtual Meeting: Monday, February 6 at 12:00 p.m. Registration is required and can be completed on the project webpage.
  • In-Person Meeting: Thursday, February 9 at 6:00 p.m. at Vel Phillips Memorial High School, 201 S. Gammon Rd. Enter front doors and look for directional signs. This meeting will have interpretation, childcare and food.
  • Virtual Meeting: Monday, February 13 at 6:00 p.m. Registration is required and can be completed on the project webpage.

• Madison Food Policy Council Announces 2023 SEED Grants Cycle: The City of Madison Food Policy Council announces the 2023 SEED Grants cycle to address food access issues in our community. SEED Grants are small grants designed to support new and recently emerging projects or programs that support access to healthy food in our community.
• Community support: Resources available following release of video in Tyre Nichols' case: The Madison Police Department is sharing a list of community support available following the release of police video in the Tyre Nichols' case.
• Statement by Mayor Rhodes-Conway on Death of Tyre Nichols: Public trust is the cornerstone of public safety and justice. Once again, that trust has been broken. 
• Chief Barnes issues statement ahead of police video release in Tyre Nichols' case: In 2020, we all watched in disbelief as the failures of leadership and training, and a lack of human decency led to the murder of Mr. George Floyd in Minneapolis.
• Plow Name Election Ends February, 3, 2023: The City of Madison Streets and Engineering Divisions and Wisconsin Salt Wise's contest to name four pieces of the City's snowplowing fleet ends at 8:00pm on Friday, February 3.
• Hours changing for fingerprinting services through MPD: The Madison Police Department is changing the hours it will offer fingerprinting services to the public.
• Starting in February, this service will only be offered on Wednesdays and Fridays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
• Call for Artists: Our Town Everywhere Self-Portraits Project with The Bubbler at Madison Public Library: The Bubbler at Madison Public Library is looking for artists to help facilitate an exciting new project called Our Town Everywhere: A Self-Portrait of Madison. This unique portrait-making project will take place throughout 2023 and across the city of Madison.

• "It's a Big Deal" -- President Biden Mentions Madison in Recent White House Speech: On Friday, President Biden gave a speech to the US Conference of Mayors at the White House, which included an unexpected pat on the back to Madison for the city's efforts to improve the climate and public health with the purchase of 46 electric buses. 
•  New South Madison Tax Incremental Financing District Proposed: The City of Madison is seeking approval of a new Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district (TID 51) that will provide an estimated $115 million in financial support, including $99 million in TIF funding, for South Madison.
• MPD hosts chili cook-off to benefit families of fallen officers: Meat, beans and spice! More than a dozen employees participated in the Madison Police Department's first chili cook-off fundraiser!
• City Engineering Launches New Program to Grow Workforce: The application is now open for the City of Madison Engineering Division's newest infrastructure program, Madison Infrastructure Training - Engineering Program, also known as the MI-TE Program.
• 2023 Spring Primary Election: Sample ballots will be available for viewing by address on the MyVote Wisconsin website at least 21 days prior to Election Day. In Wisconsin, a Spring Primary is necessary when more than two people declare they are running for the same non-partisan office that is up for election in the Spring Election.
