Snow Plow Update, 12/30/2019

December 30, 2019 1:31 PM

Tonight's snowfall means 2019 will end the way it began – with snowy, slippery roads. And with Streets Division plow trucks working through the night to keep things safe.

When the snows begin to fall this afternoon, the Streets Division will deploy 32 trucks to spread salt and plow the main thoroughfares of Madison. The streets to be salted and plowed are Metro Bus routes, roads around schools and hospitals, and other critical roadways. All told, the salt routes make up just shy of 50% of all traffic lanes of Madison. Four additional trucks will be deployed to apply sand to residential hills, curves, and intersections to provide roadway users additional traction.

The total deployment of 36 trucks will be working from when the snow begins to accumulate on the roads and on through the night into the morning.

We are likely to have an active snowfall during tonight's evening commute, so it's very important for all roadway users to make good choices. Roads may be snow-covered and slippery. Be slow. Be patient. Be alert. Give yourself extra time to arrive at your destinations, and give yourself extra space when stopping.

The roads will also be slippery Tuesday morning. Forecasts predict that the snow will end shortly before the traditional morning commute, so roadway users may well encounter snow-covered and slippery roads. Be sure to plan for extra travel time.

Residential streets are likely to be slippery tonight and throughout New Year's Eve. Roadway users must be alert and cautious throughout their holiday celebrations. Some of the initial snowfall may melt, and then freeze to the road as temperatures d

rop, creating icy areas. The Streets Division will be applying sand as needed, but slick places may persist.
Keep in mind that the Streets Division will not plow every street in the City of Madison until there are three or more inches of snow accumulated on the roads and the storm is at or near its end.  Forecasts do not show this storm producing that much snow for our roads – though the Streets Division will be watching conditions carefully. Future updates will be provided as conditions and operations change.
